DRESSED UP, a new collection by Robbie Kaye
This year a very good friend of mine sent me a link to a designer of lingerie, Nensi Dojaki. I was instantly intrigued by her geometric forms and the precision of how they adhered to the contours of the body. Fine mesh and silk created structured asymmetrical lines, while flowing freely and gracefully.
My inspiration grew as I started to experiment with forms, and I found myself indulging my alter-ego; the one that gets dressed up at night to go out on the town. This former New York City girl now lives in the country in California where most places are closed by 5 pm.
Measuring lines that were equally distant between angles offered an architectural slant as I created each dress. For some pieces, Sometimes, I strayed from an exact technique and let the dress materialize in a more unrefined way.
On another level, this work represents the allowance of oneself to shine…to be seen and not to hide.
It is my hope that the viewer of this work, makes up their own fun and courageous narrative to go along with it.

The few people who I’ve shown this work to have asked me how I transitioned from Naked Trees to Dressed Up.
I’m not exactly sure how to answer that other than to refer back to my friend who is often my muse and continues to inspire my work.
We talk about fashion, high couture and Paris. We enjoy wearing Hermes lipstick everyday and for no special occasion. Getting dressed up doesn’t have to be about wearing expensive designer clothing. It’s about wearing something I feel good in, especially since just about all of my clothing these days is covered in paint splats or resin…work clothes.
I love painting trees and being in nature…I also love to see new fashions and designs and once in a while treat myself to something special. These days, when I am working on deepening my self-love, it feels like a stretch to buy myself something that I ordinarily would not… something, extraordinary, maybe even bold. However, like most things to me, it’s a metaphor…and perhaps part of the metamorphesis.
